Arshad Sharif was a Pakistani journalist |
Arshad Sharif was a Pakistani investigative journalist who was killed by Kenyan police who claimed it was a case of "mistaken identification" while looking for a similar automobile linked to a kidnapping investigation.
The 49-year-old journalist was reportedly slain on Sunday night after police fired on the car he was driving in outside Nairobi, Kenya, after it refused to halt at a checkpoint. He was joined by Khurram Ahmed, another Pakistani who was wounded in the event.
Sharif criticised Pakistan's ruthless military, which has dominated the nation for more than 50 of the 75 years since independence. After being charged with sedition for remarks made during an interview with an opposition leader that were deemed disrespectful to the military, he departed his country in August.
After being briefly yanked off the air in August as a result of the contentious interview of Shahbaz Gill, a top associate to the late Prime Minister Imran Khan, the ARY news channel, for which Sharif served as an anchor for eight years, severed ties with Sharif.
Journalists in Pakistan are shocked by the assassination and have requested a thorough investigation.
Moving Body To Pakistan
In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that Sharif's body was leaving Kenya and would land in Pakistan later on Tuesday.
The tragedy were discussed with Kenyan President William Ruto on Monday by the non-relative of the murdered journalist, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
When the plane carrying Sharif's remains took departure from the Nairobi airport, Pakistani diplomats were there.
